Barbara Szczepanska was born in Warsaw and graduated from the Chopin University of Music in Warsaw, and finished postgraduate piano studies lead by prof. Victor Mierzhanov at the Moscow State Tchaikovsky Conservatory. F. Chopin opuses and the piano sonatas by J. Haydn and L. van Beethoven form the very core of her repertoire. Concert tours led the pianist through Poland, Hungary, Spain, Italy and Germany. She have played with renowned orchestras, but also made her reputation as soloist and chamber musician.
After educational activities at the academies in Warsaw and Münster, in 1989 she became professor at the Robert Schumann University of Music and Media in Düsseldorf. From 1998 to 2008 she was vice-rector of the university. She was also managing the training center Schumann Junior for highly talented children studying at the university. In addition, she is visiting professor in United Kingdom, Poland, South Korea and China. Since 2017, Barbara Szczepanska also has been holding a professors’ position at the Music Department of Kalaidos University of Applied Sciences in Zürich.
First prizes at the prestigious piano competitions, by which her students have been awarded, show the pedagogical success of Barbara Szczepanska. Her students have won important competitions like the ARD Competition in Munich, the Queen Elisabeth Competition in Brussels, the International Competition in Leeds, the J. S. Bach Competition in Leipzig, the Young Pianists Competition in Ettlingen and the F. Liszt Competition in Weimar.
As a jury member, professor Szczepanska took part in many international competitions like F. Liszt Competition in Weimar, B. Dvarionas Competition in Vilnius, Young Pianists Competition in Ettlingen, L. van Beethoven Competition in Bonn. Barbara Szczepanska is an artistic director of the R. Schumann Competition for Young Pianists in Düsseldorf, which takes place every two years since 2017.
